LIGHTS FOR LIVES
HOPEWALK AT NIGHT
The event is simple, but it is up to you - yes the power is in your hands. Gather as many people together from your fitness group, church group, community groups, clubs, agencies and companies and choose a mountain/hill.
Our suicide awareness plan is to gather as many people on every major mountain/hill peak at 5am. Each person must bring their phone with them to use as a light (instead of candles or any other flamable light source).
We will shine "lights" for "lives" for loved ones who have committed suicide and for those who are suffering with mental illness - reminding them that they not alone.
Lights will shine from 5am to 5.30am. You probably asking why 5.00am, not 6am - the reason is very simple. The reason why 5.00am is because New Zealand averages 500 suicides per year based on latest NZ stats. We are trying to make a point.
Also symbolically we want the light to piece through the dark night in a symbolic way metaphorically for those who are struggling as a message that there is HOPE.
Now where does the walking take place? In most major mountain/hill sites the gates only open at 6am or 7am, so you will have to park the car at the bottom of the hill and WALK to the top.
Our challenge is for all the bootcamps; training sessions; gyms; programmes throughout New Zealand that train in the mornings to put this as part of your programme/s.
Auckland will be an amazing site as all the major mountain face each other and it would be great to see all the hills/mountains covered with "Lights for Lives", but equally other mountains/hills will be spectacular to see all over Aotearoa.
